57 Organizing a Really Big Race
The Head of the Charles Regatta will be held October 18-19 here in Cambridge, Mass., on the Charles River. I am helping out with transportation of the umpires for the race, which will involve more than 7,000 rowers. I've been working on preparations from Denver until yesterday, when I arrived in Cambridge in time for the weekly meeting of volunteer chairs working on various aspects of the event. It's mind-boggling that a cast of volunteers can make so much happen so smoothly. The one thing no committee can control is the weather, so I'm picturing a gorgous fall day like this one: sunny, crisp and flat water out there on the river.
