48 At the C.M. Russell Museum

Before returning home Sunday after giving a podcasting session at "The Art of Leadership" workshop for the Montana Arts Council, I visited the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls. The museum has some fine artwork by the revered Western painter, along with letters and mementos of his younger years. I enjoyed hearing stories about Russell from Dan Schlecht, the Hampton Inn weekend maintenance guy who drove me to the musuem and whose grandparents knew the artist. On a quiet Sunday morning, museum shop assistant David Morand showed me around and had his own good stories to tell. I highly recommend this destination if you find yourself anywhere Great Falls. The workshop, where I presented with Dale Erquiaga and Jim Copenhaver, was partly funded by a grant from the.

I'm hoping the museum's chief executive officer and David's Mom, Anne Morand, will be inspired by my workshop session to put up a Charlie Russell podcast sometime soon!

46 A Podcast Sampler

During the two-hour drive from Canyon City to Denver on Sunday, I enjoyed the chance to catch up with some of my favorite audio podcasts. I shot some video and when I got home I mixed it with sample clips from the following podcasts:

The Daily Source Code with Adam Curry

On Point with Tom Ashbrook (excerpt of interview with economist Lawrence Summers)

In the Box with Keith Monaghan

iinnovate hosted by Stanford students (intro to interview with Scott Dunlap)

Book Review hosted by Sam Tanenhaus, editor of the New York Times Book Review.

Bloomberg on the Economy hosted by Tom Keene (excerpt of interview with Sir Howard Davies, director of the London School of Economics.)

High Orbit hosted by Matthew Ebel

I hope this gives you a good taste of the variety available in audio podcasts. All of these are free, available at the iTunes Store. I subscribe to them in iTunes and sync them with my iPhone. To listen to them via my car speakers, I use a Monster iCarPlay Cassette Adapter that I bought at an Apple store. No commercials, no waiting for some stupid DJ to play something that interests me. I hardly ever listen to earth radio any more.

How about you? What podcasts are YOU listening to in your car? Let me know in the comments or leave a voice comment at 206-339-4717. Or you can email me at PodChronicles@gmail.com .

45 Birthday of Many Colors

My wife Darlene celebrated her 51st birthday today with by starting a new quilt, assisted by her good friend Tish Atkinson from Casper, Wyoming. The coat I bought her for Christmas and birthday finally arrived yesterday, just in time. There were also flowers and strawberries dipped in chocolate to note the occasion. Darlene is all about color, and this podcast episode is all about her, with love.

The music is "Millionaire Girlfriend" Karaoke version by Jonathan Coulton, used under his Creative Commons license.

44 Bryan Person in Person

Bryan Person in the past two years has become a very busy man in the social media space. In addition to his day job at Monster, he tends a podcast and a blog, and he has created a Social Media Breakfast series in Boston, with associated breakfasts in several other cities. I visited Bryan this week at Monster's sprawling facilities in an old mill in Maynard, Massachusetts. In addition to a one-minute pitch for Twitter, he offered useful tips for social media newcomers on how to get started, a potential pitfall, and details of the Social Media Breakfast he will host with Jeff Pulver on April 1, 2008 at 8 a.m. at the S & S Restaurant, 1334 Cambridge St., Cambridge, Mass.

Music for this episode is "Ouray" by Andy McKee from his "Gates of Gnomeria" CD, courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network.

43 Matthew Ebel Rising

New-media musicological phenomenon Matthew Ebel is still getting settled in his new home in Wellesley, Massachusetts, after his recent move from Nashville. I visited with him (and a resident cat, Murphy) yesterday afternoon. Matthew talked about what's up for his next album, his creative process, how a junior high school teacher set him on the path of combining his geek passion with his musical ability, and how podcasting enabled him to find his audience. All in all, it was a great chance to look behind the music of the singer-songwriter who has been called an acoustic geek-rocker and the love child of Elton John and Billy Joel.

Music for this episode is "The Getaway" from Matthew's latest album, "Goodbye Planet Earth."

42 Regarding Emmy

The grande dame of our building in Denver is Emmy, who turned 91 years old last month. Her friend Nancy set the stage for an interview in Emmy's unit this morning in which she and I talked about longevity, what's great about Denver, and why more people die of boredom in the suburbs than ever get shot in Lower Downtown (LoDo). I had a great time visiting with her and hope you enjoy the episode.

Music for this episode is "Of Dark Rooms and Crooked Candles" by Josh Woodward, courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network.
